Digital Signage displays and how to get Content on them

2018solution digital signageDigital Signage has become ever more prevalent in our daily lives. We see it everywhere. It is being used for advertising, way finding, information, cuing systems as well as for entertainment. It is used in many, diverse market segments including retail, industrial, hospitality and corporate.

Digital Signage technology has transformed over the years and has now become more immersive with high definition graphics and videos, and is much simpler to implement and manage than in the past.

OPTIONS AVAILABLE

There are many display options available, but by far the most popular and cost effective are flat panel LCD displays. They can be deployed in many different and interesting configurations. These displays can be used singularly or grouped into a video wall. They can also be used in a vertical (or portrait) orientation to fit the content better, or just to be more aesthetically pleasing. Video walls can also be made up of displays in portrait mode.

HOW TO GET THE CONTENT ON THE SCREEN

There are a few ways of getting the content you require onto the screens and the best method would differ from project to project.
  • On board media player with local content
  • Streaming over IP (either wired or wireless)
  • Video over dedicated cabled systems
All of these methods have advantages and disadvantages.

ON BOARD MEDIA PLAYER

This method is best suited in small systems or when the content will not be changed often. The content can either be uploaded remotely via a network connection or by recording the content onto a flash drive (or similar) and inserting it into the media player.

STREAMING OVER IP

Streaming over IP is fast becoming the most popular method of deploying digital signage in both small as well as large projects. Increased available bandwidth and the flexibility of this solution is what make it attractive. Multiple content streams can be sent over the network and individual displays can be selected to display the desired content. The content can be managed and monitored remotely.

VIDEO OVER DEDICATED CABLED SYSTEMS

This method has been around for a long time and is still widely used today. This requires a dedicated cable infrastructure using either copper or fibre cabling. It generally requires a star layout and a dedicated ‘home run’ for every required channel. It also requires a head-end consisting of sources, matrix switchers and distribution amplifiers. The transmission system utilizes either video over twisted pair or fibre cabling in order to cater for the long runs.
